Letter to investigation of NMC culture & whistleblowing

Dec 21, 2023 | Fitness to Practice, Reflection | 0 comments

NMCWatch and Midwives Haven have written a letter to the KC investigating the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) culture and whistleblowing.

To summarise: we raise our concerns regarding the NMC’s handling of investigations. We highlight the potential biases and cultural insensitivity in the investigation process, with this leading to disproportionate scrutiny of nurses and midwives from minority backgrounds and overseas. Issues include language expectations, acceptance of complaints without examining underlying racism, lack of diversity in panels, and inadequate preparation for overseas registrants. We also highlight poor case management, GDPR breaches, and a prosecutorial culture within the NMC. Despite years of complaints, we are concerned that there is a lack of reflection and remediation within the NMC’s practices.
